Camerawork In film, there are many camera angles and movement which are used in combination in order to create scenes which are exciting and create meanings. From my research, I have learnt about and discovered why these certain shots are: Camera angles Establishing shot (ES) - An extreme long shot which is used to establish a location. Long-shot (LS) - Shot which shows full body and background of characters within the scene. Medium-shot (MS) - Half of body from waist upwards used mostly in dialogue scenes. Close up shot (CUS) - Head and facial features normally to show detail and emotion. Extreme close up (ECU) - 1 feature only like mouth or eyes showing detail and emotion. Point of view shot (POV) - Shot matches line of sight of character to show what they see. Birds eye shot - Shot from above to show location but can be expensive. Low shot - Camera is from below the character to show size and power. Worms eye - Camera is on the floor exaggerating size and power. Shot reverse

There are 2 font styles: Serif's Serif's are the small finishing strokes on the end of typed letters. They are used in the majority of body texts as it makes them easy to read. Using serif said to be masculine as it makes the text seem bold. The image below explains. Conventions Pulp fiction is a movie from 1994 which clearly uses serif's to make the titles stand out. This was conventional within the decade. However as seen in the Skyfall titles below, sans serif is used which makes the title look subtle. I still think the lettering looks classy even though it doesn't have serif's.

Sound is essential in film as it is one of the micro elements which combine in order to produce media. Sound establishes the diegesis to the audience. Sound is used to: Inform the audience. Create meaning. Emphasis points. Diegetic sound "Sound in the world of narrative". Including dialogue and all sound affects and any sound which can be seen taking place within the scene. In order to know whether sound is diegetic, you can ask the question "can the characters hear this". Non-diegetic sound "Sound that exists outside of the narrative". The audience can hear these sounds however the characters can not. Normally this sound will be additional music played over a scene. Music is very important to create atmosphere and suspense in thrillers. These are the types of sound used but there are also specific meanings of when a sound is used compared to the meaning within the scene. Parallel sound - The sound enhances and emphasises the same meaning that the sc

Representation The ideology of representation in media is one which is theorised by many philosophers as it is very important in todays society. Stuart Hall's theory of encoding and decoding is an important part of audience theory and aids to help audience how an audience will think. This theory suggests that the director encodes a particular message or meaning which the audience can analyse and decode to find out the meaning. Hall believes decoding is the most important part of theory as not many theorists analyse it. We decode depending on psychographics and demographics personal to the viewer. Hall also believes that audience members adopt one of 3 opinions to what they are seeing: Dominant / Preferred reading - this is the opinion which the director wants the audience to take. This will likely be due to a similar age, culture or background which the audience member and director may share. Oppositional reading - this is an opposing opinion to which the director wants and is n

My Top 5 Thriller Movies Mission Impossible : Fallout This is one of my favourite films as it stars Tom Cruise. He is one of the most prestigious actors having won 3 golden globes over his career. However for the 6th instalment of the 'Mission Impossible' franchise he decided to co - produce the film with JJ Abrams. At the box office MI6 grossed 791M with a 168m budget, making it the franchises most popular film. The soundtrack was nominated for a BAFTA. What I really enjoy about this movie is the high intensity of action and it doesn't waste time with an elaborate protagonist back story that a lot of crime thrillers have. It gets to the main plot line early on. In which Ethan Hunt played by Tom Cruise is a spy working for the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) is given the mission to obtain Plutonium before the antagonist can. However this goes wrong and the plutonium ends up in the wrong hands. The CIA then assigns August Walker to Hunt to keep an eye on him and help him out

What is a thriller? After starting research into what a thriller is, I discovered that it has many sub-genres. There are many however the main three are Mystery, Psychological and Crime, as they have been the most popular in recent years. This agrees with David Buckinghams theory of genre as he suggests that genre is a constant negotiation within the time period. Consequently, currently in 2020 we believe that this is what a thriller and its sub-genres are: A mystery thriller normally consists of a story with many twists and turns that keep the audience guessing of who is telling the truth. Traditionally, they are told from either the hero's or villain's point of view. They mostly reveal the crime but then work backwards to discover who done it. Some examples of these are: The irishman, Jaws and Inception. A psychological thriller contains a protagonist who is mentally unstable normally with a questionable approach behind their actions. The Joker is a good example of this as ev

Brief & Reaction Option 1: Film opening task (video) Main task: the titles and opening of a new fiction film (to last a maximum of two minutes). Titles should follow the institutional conventions of commercial cinema. The task may be undertaken individually or as a group. There should be a maximum of four members to a group. All images and text used in the main task must be original, and produced by the candidate(s). Sound should be predominantly original (dialogue and atmospheric sound), though music taken from an acknowledged source may be used as part of the soundtrack. This task should be preceded by relevant preliminary exercises to build up candidates’ skills with equipment and their understanding of conventions. After reading both briefs, I researched more into what a thriller is, as I already knew the basic outline of the magazine task. This opened my eyes as I found that movies I thought were action actually turned out to be thrillers. Immediately, I decided to take on the
